PronoKal PnK Method

The PronoKal PnK Method

What is the PronoKal PnK Method and what does it bring you that other diets do not?

The PronoKal PnK Method is a medically controlled, very low calorie ketogenic diet designed to produce rapid weight loss and long-term maintenance. Patients are guided right through the process by a multidisciplinary team led by a doctor, and including dietitian-coaches and a personal trainer. It is backed up by the PronoKal Group Medical Department and numerous clinical trials (with more than 5 currently under way).

The PnK Method uses a ketogenic diet. As I mention in another blog, a ketogenic diet must be very low in carbohydrate. The PnK diet is also very low in fat, so it has very few calories—only about 650 kcal/day in Step 1. This means you will lose weight fast; the average weight loss in our clinical trials was 9 kg (almost 1½ stone) in the first month. Rapid weight loss has now been shown to achieve better short-term and long-term results than slow weight loss.

The PnK Method is based on a wide range of meal replacement products, including drinks, soups, omelettes, risotto, bars, crisps, many types of biscuits, and much more. All these products are derived from natural foods from which we have removed the fat and carbohydrate. While on the diet, you will also be eating permitted vegetables (those that are low in carbs) twice a day.

It usually takes 2 or 3 days to get into ketosis. This is because the body must first use up its store of carbohydrate. Once ketosis develops, you will notice how the feeling of hunger disappears, you feel good, focussed, and quite energetic despite the lack of sugar.

You will really notice the weight start to fall off. And a very positive feature of the PnK Method is that the weight that is lost is almost all fat. Some muscle is always lost with low calorie diets, but PronoKal reduces muscle loss by a half to two-thirds, whilst increasing the rate of fat loss. Muscle burns many more calories than fat, even when you’re not exercising, so the maintenance of muscle mass with PnK will mean it is easier for you to lose weight and you are less likely to put it back on again. PronoKal achieves this by providing very high biological value protein at the amount demonstrated to cover the body’s requirements together with a specific exercise programme. In this way, the body doesn’t have to draw on protein from muscle to make up for a lack of dietary protein, as can occur with standard low-calorie diets, and the exercise gives the muscles the stimulus they need not to lose volume.

The number of PnK products you need each day is gradually reduced as you lose weight. We replace these products with protein foods, such as meat, poultry, fish or eggs. When you have lost most of the weight you want to lose, you will be brought carefully out of ketosis and will start on a phase of dietary re-education, in which we will guide you towards a healthy balanced diet through the gradual reintroduction of natural foods. After you reach your target weight, we will stay with you and follow you up for another 2 years to help prevent weight regain.

The risk of weight regain is reduced by another special feature of the PnK Method: the treatment of lipoinflammation. Throughout the weight loss phase (and long-term thereafter) you will be taking a particular omega-3 essential oil (omega-3 DHA) at a dose shown in clinical trials to reduce lipoinflammation. This is a type of chronic background inflammation related to obesity that increases your feelings of hunger and reduces satiety, as well as making the body more likely to store fat. In this way it sets up a vicious circle that favours obesity. It is also thought to be the link between obesity and most of the obesity-related chronic diseases (insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer…).

In summary, the advantages of the PnK Method:
     - Medically controlled

     - Monitoring by a multidisciplinary team

     - Rapid weight loss at the expense of fat
     - Absence of hunger
     - Dietary re-education
     - Long-term follow-up
     - Reduced risk of weight regain
